David Barrett, CEO of EBC Group (UK), Samuel Hertz, Director of operations SE Asia of EBC Group, and Professor Terence Chong, MH at CUHK attended the event and shared their insights into global economy and investment opportunities respectively.
First of all, Mr. Barrett highlighted the economic outlook and regulation. As a seasoned professional with over three decades of experience, he pointed the interest rate as the key factor that affecting the global economy. Since the financial crisis, the market has relied heavily on the ultra-low rates; that is why the market suffered significant pain caused by the aggressive tightening policy, like the U.S. regional bank crisis. He predicted the rates would remain high due to inflation but return to normal within the next 18 months. In asset allocation, the gold and companies with strong balance sheet would outperform.
Then Prof. Chong’s discussed the relationship among inflation cycle, retail figures and economic recovery. He claimed while ECB’s inaction has resulted in high inflation curbing retail recovery outlook, the Fed’s radical interest hikes brought the modest growth of retail industry. And the 4% inflation rate would support the idea of taking a pause. He predicted Europe would digest the impact of high inflation rate, and the concern on recession of the U.S. raised by the inverted yield curve would be reflected by the interest rate spreads.
During the award presentation, Mr. Barrett handed over the hefty rewards to the champion Xu Liangping, included a US $200,000 cash award, a trophy and the champion’s ring. Xu has won the competition by completing near 100k orders and generated a sizable rate of return of 11630.98%.
